a few weeks ago we had an ace masterclass with illustrator Chris Long, his work is at chrislongstudio.com. He set us all a really fun day project of working on an editorial- which i have never actually done before. Boy o boy it was tricky. i started off being way too literal with my story which was “how to win an eating contest” and Chris was super creative and encouraging. So i started with this idea of just drawing someone winning an eating contest- YAWN! and then developed this idea of someone competing with the food, not other people. This seemed more fun to me and i was happy to have developed the idea more than i ordinarily would have done!

so i have decided to enter a competition open to any unpublished illustrator and since i fit that category – sadly weep weep . i want to enter it as the prize is more awesome than i could imagine. i clearly dont have a hope in hecks chance of winning but also the whole project would be nice to put in my asssement portfolio for uni. i have really enjoyed it but holy moly it was hard work.

i have been working so hard on it, and changing my mind about the characters, crying about how rubbish they look and then deciding i LOVE them and then deciding not to enter the competition for fear of being laughed outta town … and now just trudging on just so i can say to myself that i kept to the challenge despiite how tricky it wa- which is something i hate to do. i am a flake and quitter- but not any more. like my little fairy i am pulling my socks up!

. i really want a baby walrus a bunny and a cat now! but i do have the cutest little dog so i cant complain really. he is called bugly and he is part Pug, part Chihuahua and part gremlin- an i mean the part of the gremlin that got fed after midnight.
